The brainstem auditory potentials were studied in 13 patients with Friedreich's ataxia diagnosed according to genetic criteria, clinical features, echocardiographic findings and electrophysiologic nerve studies. Potentials were altered in all patients. The alterations ranged from increased latency between waves to absence of one or more peaks and complete disappearance of tracings. No relationship could be established between the degree of these alterations and the clinical and electrophysiological data nor with the degree of cerebellar or brainstem atrophy observed with computed tomography. The pattern suggested a lesion of the 8th cranial nerve or brainstem or both.
