The trends in employment in agriculture between 1970 and 1978 are discussed; especially the condition of the private sector which fed the labour needs of non-agricultural employment. There has been considerable controversy as to the exact nature of the amount of labour which is employed in the private sector of agriculture: this is due to the difficulty of assessing the contribution of the part-time farmer to the private sector. It also makes it difficult to assess the real incomes of many people, especially private farmers.
