Serum cholesterol and triglycerides in post-partum psychosis

In continuation of our work on stressful situations in female life, observations on serum cholesterol and triglyceride responses to post-partum psychosis are reported in the case of 27 female patients, clinically diagnosed as puerperal psychotics of a schizophrenic type. The results of serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels during an attack to puerperal psychosis and following 3 weeks of drug and ECT treatment indicated two types of statistically significant responses viz. one group showing an increase (P < 0.001) and the other showing a fall (P < 0.001). Probable factors influencing these opposite responses are discussed with a view to throwing light on the merits and limitations of biochemical changes from a clinician's point of view.
