Live adults of S. cervi (3 females; 2 males) were transplanted into groups of 15 thyroidectomized, 15 pancreatectomized and 10 control rats by laporotomy. Eltroxin (thyroid sodium) was given to thyroidectomized rats at 250 and 500 micro g/kg bwt, daily for 3 weeks. Insulin was given to pancreatectomized rats at 0.1 and 0.2 IU/kg bwt, daily for the same period. The duration and density of microfilariae in the thyroidectomized rats decreased, and that in pancreatectomized rats increased, relative to controls. The pattern of microfilaraemia in the rats given Eltroxin and insulin was similar to that of the controls. Sex of the host had no influence on the pattern of microfilaraemia and/or survival of adult S. cervi. At necropsy, following the disappearance of microfilariae from the circulation, dead, degenerated or calcified forms of S. cervi were recovered from the mesenteries and genital organs.
