Elaphostrongylus cervi cervi in the central nervous system of red deer (Cervus elaphus) in Scotland

In 1984 examination of 18 carcasses and 29 heads of red deer found dead or culled revealed E. cervi between the meninges in 12 of 20 calves, one of 9 yearlings, but none of 18 aged over 2 years. No gross or histological reactions to the parasite were detected. Interstitial protostronylid pneumonia is reported in deer of all ages in Scotland.
