After inoculating the cornea and peritoneum of the mouse with herpes simplex virus (HSV), cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) were induced in vitro from spleen cells with the use of LPS stimulated lymphoblasts infected with HSV and their cytotoxicity was examined. The appearance and elevation of CTL activity were delayed in the corneal inoculated group more than in the i.p. inoculated group, but 10 days after infection the activity was of the same level. Apparently, CTL plays an important role in protecting the individual from infection at the time of corneal infection by HSV.
