Xenogeneic antisera were prepared in rats by i.p. injection of alloimmune thymus-derived cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) that were activated on monolayers of PHA A blasts, CTL-P815 conjugates or PHA-P activated alloimmune T lymphocytes, substantially removed the blocking activity. CTL probably possess a lytic mechanism that is cryptic (not reactive with RAT antiserum) but becomes exposed when activated by interaction with specific antigen or lectins. RAT serum recognizes structures involved in the lytic step of cytolysis independent of antigen recognition or lymphocyte-target binding.
