An increased tolerance to glucose after repeated stimulation of insulin secretion over a 30-min interval cannot be caused only by a higher concentration of insulin in the serum, but must also be the result of insulin secreted following previous stimulation, whose effects persist although the fixation in insulin receptors has passed. The rise in glucose tolerance occurred even after 1 repetition of stimulation; further repetitions had no effect. Apparently, the maximum effect on the transport of glucose into the cell and on the intracellular mechanisms is achieved by 1 repetition of stimulation within 30 min.
