Cytochemical and cytofluorometric methods have been used to study the basic components of the intraleukocytic microbicidal system of neutrophil leukocytes in 40 patients suffering from botulism. In the course of botulism there was a regular decrease in the content of glycogen and cationic protein and in the leukocyte myeloperoxidase activity which is dependent on the stage and severity of a pathological process. At the same time, values of the NBT test and phosphatase activity of neutrophils increase, reaching the maximum level at the peak of the disease. These deep enzymatic shifts, a decreased content of cationic protein and glycogen in the leukocytes of patients with botulism evidence that the intraleukocytic microbicidal system is suppressed. This system is essential in the body nonspecific reactivity.
