Serum .alpha.-2-macroglobulin (.alpha.-MG) activity was found to be decreased in snake bite victims. The diminition was more in the nine victims whose blood samples were collected more than 24 h after the bite (119 .+-. 50 mg/dl) compared to the (250 .+-. 69 mg/dl, n = 7) blood samples procured within 2-12 h (P < 0.001). Cobra and Russel viper venoms at lethal doses were found to inactivate serum .alpha.-MG in a time-dependant manner in in vitro studies. Viper venom in contrast to cobra venom also diminished total serum antitryptic activity.
