Isolation of a bovine adenovirus from fallow deer (Dama dama)

A type 6 bovine adenovirus of subgroup II was isolated in calf testicle cell culture from the lungs and trachea of a succumbed fallow deer (Dama dama), which had been kept in the Budapest Zoo, in a group of fallow deers showing mild respiratory symptoms. Convalescent sera of the surviving animals contained in antibodies to infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR), respiratory syncytial (RS) and parainfluenza-3 (PI-3) viruses; however, antibodies to type 2 and 6 bovine adenoviruses were detectable. Based upon the characteristic gross pathological and histopathological changes, the demonstration of virus-neutralizing antibodies in the convalescent sera and the isolation of adenovirus it can be postulated that the primary cause of the respiratory disease was the type 6 bovine adenovirus.
