Sexing of living larvae and pupae of Culex pipiens molestus (Forskal) (Diptera, Culicidae)

Sexing of living Culex pipiens molestus larvae and pupae was carried out on the basis of two parameters. The first were the measurements of the head, the thorax and the first, eighth and anal abdominal segments in fourth instar larvae; the cephalothorax and abdominal segments of the late pupal stage were also measured. The measurements obtained in females were found to be larger than in males. Application of the t-test showed that the differences were statistically highly significant. The second parameters, which proved to be about 98% accurate, was the colouring of fourth instar larvae. Violet and green larvae developed into females and mauve larvae into males.
