Fractures in turkeys associated with lymphoma

In a flock of 400 turkey poults of a fast growing strain, reared on concrete flooring with sawdust litter, a few cases of splayed legs developed at 2 weeks and of twisted legs at 5-6 weeks. Examination of nine birds that became lame at 7-16 weeks revealed fractures, usually bilateral, of the proximal tibiotarsi. Histologically there was an irregular line of separation distal to the proximal growth plate, with tissue necrosis. The medullary cavity of all the distal fragments was densely infiltrated with pleomorphic lymphomatous cells, avascular and usually devoid of normal bone marrow elements. Liver and kidney from two birds showed a similar pleomorphic picture. Spleen was normal.
