Tryptophan metabolism via kynurenine is altered in syphilis; after a load of 50 mg/kg body wt of L-tryptophan the urinary excretion of kynurenine, 3-hydroxykynurenine and xanthurenic acid is increased, suggesting a deficiency of vitamin B6.
