Paragonimiasis: experimental and clinical experience with praziquantel in Korea

The effects of praziquantel on Paragonimus westermani were studied by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. In vivo the worms contracted and intense vacuolisation of the tegument occurred. In vitro only very few vacuoles were formed after incubation in 100 micro g/ml for 60 min. Praziquantel at 3 x 25 mg/kg body weight/day for 3 days cured all of 10 patients, at 3 x 25 mg/kg/day for 2 days it cured 18 of 21 and at 3 x 25 mg/kg for one day it cured 15 of 21. Only 2 of the 9 uncured patients were not cured by a 2nd treatment with 3 x 25 mg/kg/day for 2 or 3 days. After treatment the clinical condition of the patients improved.
