Amoebiasis in Pondicherry (clinical, serological and immunological study)

Patients with clinical features of amoebiasis in Pondicherry, India, seen from November 1977 to October 1980 were studied. There were 117 cases of intestinal, 50 of hepatic and 5 of both intestinal and hepatic amoebiasis. 125 were male and 2/3rds of the cases were 21 to 40 years old. Over half the patients had a history of alcoholism. Clinical features, liver function tests and serological tests are described. Indirect haemagglutination and bentonite flocculation were positive in 90 and 88.5%, respectively, of cases of liver abscess. The tests were positive in 54.7 and 48%, respectively, of intestinal cases. Mantoux and DNCB tests showed impaired cellular responses in amoebiasis patients.
