Scanning electron microscopic evaluation of tinea versicolor. Effects of treatment with miconazole nitrate and clotrimazole

A study of tinea versicolor organisms (Malassezia furfur), obtained by applying strips of transparent cellophane tape to affected skin in a 26-yr-old man, is reported. Morphological changes in M. furfur during treatment of the patient with topical clotrimazole and miconazole nitrate (applied to different arms) consisted of initial wrinkling of the surface, followed by fragmentation. It is suggested that these changes reflect cell wall alterations resulting from inhibited ergosterol synthesis induced by both treatment agents. The 2 drugs were effective in eliminating M. furfur.
