Cervical mucus. Spontaneous or hormone induced quantitative changes

Variations in the quantity of cervical mucus secreted during the menstrual cycle and under estrogenic stimulation were studied in 7 women aged 25-30 years with normal biphasic cycles. Quantities varied during the cycle, gradually increasing during the preovulatory phase and reaching a maximum the day of ovulation. Dry weight of cervical mucus did not vary, however. In women treated with mixtures of conjugated estrogens or with ethinyl estradiol, mucus secretion rapidly reached levels comparable to ovulatory levels, and remained at these levels until treatment was stopped. It is suggested that cervical mucus levels may provide a simple and reliable index of ovarian function and particularly of ovulation.
