Quantitative study of normal bronchial mucus glands

Human subjects (36) who had no chronic respiratory disorder and who died of nonrespiratory causes were studied for the quantitation of mucus glands. Histological sections from the main and lobar bronchi of both lungs were studied using the Reid index. The Reid index varied from 0.11 to 0.59 with a mean of 0.32. These values are quite high compared to those of Reid. There was no significant increase in the Reid index with age, though there was a tendency towards higher values with increasing age. No statistically significant difference was found between the Reid indices of the main and lobar bronchi and, therefore, no particular site can be considered as more representative than the other.
