Preliminary report on the susceptibility of mosquitoes to Brugia pahangi

The susceptibility of 8 species of mosquitoes to Brugia pahangi, a causal agent of filariasis, was determined in laboratory tests in Taiwan. A strain of Aedes aegypti from Liverpool, England, and strains of A. togoi, Armigeres subalbatus and Mansonia uniformis from Taiwan became infected with third-stage nematode larvae 14 days after feeding on infected rats. The numbers of infective nematode larvae per infected mosquito 14 days after feeding on the same rat were 7.6, 8.8, 42.6 and 3.3 for the 4 species, respectively. Strains of Aedes aegypti, A. albopictus, A. pseudalbopictus, Culex pipiens fatigans [C. quinquefasciatus] and C. annulus from Taiwan were not susceptible to infection.
