One hundred twenty-two subjects participated in a double-blind study to evaluate their taste preferences for unsweetened and sweetened (saccharin) toothpaste models. Selected demographic variables such as age, sex, family relationship and time were manipulated to test whether or not they significantly influenced taste preferences. No statistically significant taste preferences were established for sweetened and unsweetened toothpastes. Variables such as order, family relationship, time (night), and differences among families were shown to have an effect on taste preference. Saccharin may not be a necessary motivational ingredient added to toothpaste to encourage children and adults to brush regularly.
