Immunohistochemical demonstration of target cells for sexual hormones in the skin of the domestic pig

With the help of the unlabeled antibody peroxidase-antiperoxidase method of Sternberger it was possible to demonstrate target cells for sexual hormones (estradiol and testosterone) in the sexually differentiated skin (scrotum, vulva and teat) of adult domestic pigs. Structures of the snout, anal region and hairy skin showed no positive staining reactions. The reaction complex was localized in the nuclei of the epidermis, predominantly in the stratum basale, and in the nuclei of secretory cells of the vulval apocrine glands. Juvenile animals exhibited no corresponding staining reaction.
