A total of 282 strains of Proteus and Providencia isolated from various clinical material were typed by the proteocine sensitivity method. The major sources of Proteus strains were pus (40.4%), stool (33.3%) and urine (17.4%). P. mirabilis was the most common species (74.8%) found irrespective of the source. Different patterns (56) were detected among 68.1% of the typable strains. The predominant type among fecal isolates of P. mirabilis was 4114 while 0200 was found to be common in the isolates derived from pus. The possible significance and implications of these findings are discussed.
