Effect of "liuwei dihuang decoction" on prevention and treatment of tumor

Clinical and experimental investigations of Liuwei Dihuang decoction (LWDH, an ancient recipe) were made in our laboratory. LWDH decreased the incidence of tumor of anterior stomach or lung produced by N-nitrososarcosine or urethan in mice, prolonged the life of tumor-bearing animals, and increased the cAMP content in murine uterocervical carcinoma (U14) cells. The recipe enhanced the phagocytic function of the reticuloendothelial system, promoted the proliferation of hemogenic stem cells and lymphoid tissue, maintained thyroid function, and decreased the catabolism of protein in U14-bearing mice. LWDH also strengthened the muscles and increased body weight in normal mice. Patients with epithelial dysplasia of esophagus, a preneoplastic lesion of esophageal carcinoma, were treated by using this recipe. The canceration rate within 1 year was 2.2% (2 92) in the treated, and 12.4% (11 89) in an untreated group. Within 5 years these rates were 9% (5 57) and 26% (12 47) respectively (P < 0.025).
