Secretory cells lining the alveolus of an active poll gland have a spherical nucleus, massive Golgi complex, numerous mitochondria, granular endoplasmic reticulum, many ribosomes and secretory granules. In a resting gland, the nucleus is infolded, the Golgi complex inconspicuous and there are few other organelles or secretory granules. The alveolar cells undergo a cyclic merocrine secretory activity yielding a proteinaceous product. Possible synthesis of steroids by the gland is suggested.
