Erythrocytic delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALA-D) values were measured in apparently healthy adult buffaloes (20 males, 10 females); 30 male buffalo calves, 40-50 days of age; and 30 adult dromedaries (10 males, 20 females) brought to the Cairo abattoir. In camels, the mean value for free ALA-D activity was 36.52+or-7.62 micro mol porphobilinogen/litre blood per hour in males (range 15.5-92.11), 41.29+or-6.03 (12.5-100.75) in females. Values are also given for total and reactivated activities. In buffaloes the mean activity of free ALA-D was 110.28+or-10.2 (24.18-210.5) in males, 129.95+or-16.58 (58.64-263.44) in females, and 283.32+or-17.4 (102.89-438.56) in calves. The ratios of reactivated:free ALA-D were 0.864+or-0.058 in camels, 0.519+or-0.084 in buffaloes and 0.314+or-0.049 in buffalo calves, and it is concluded that these animals are relatively resistant to lead poisoning.
