Examination of brown trout, rainbow trout and grayling revealed this disease, of obscure aetiology, which may be a protozoal infection, in 33 trout farms and in 10 rivers of the German Federal Republic between 1981 and 1983, always between August and December. Its occurrence seemed to be favoured by pollution with sewage effluent.
