Identification of Diphyllobothrium sp. in salmonid species from Rupanco Lake, Chile

Of 150 trout (Salmo trutta fario and S. gairdnerii irideus) from Lake Rupanco, Chile, 70.6% were found to be infected with plerocercoids, particularly in the coelom. 8 dogs were infected orally with plerocercoids and 2 acquired Diphyllobothrium tapeworms (5 adults and one immature form). On the other hand, no ova could be found in the faeces of people or dogs living round the lake and it is possible that the trout became infected from fish-eating birds.
