The occurrence of proliferative kidney disease on a chalk stream

Outbreaks of proliferative kidney disease are reported in fish on farms which drew their water from a common source, a highly eutrophic alkaline chalk stream with pH 7.9 to 8.3 and hardness of 230 ppm CaCO3. High mortalities were seen during the summer months among all sizes of fish. Low grade mortalities among larger table-sized fish continued into the winter. Histopathological examination confirmed the presence of large numbers of histiocytic amoebae in the kidney and spleen. This represents a new and potentially economically damaging threat to the UK trout farming industry.
