Transmission of Chagas' disease through transplanted kidney: occurrence of the acute form of the disease in two recipients from the same donor

Short case-histories are given for the 2 recipients, a 43-year-old woman and a 10-year-old boy, both of whom were negative for Chagas' disease before transplantation. The donor of both transplanted kidneys, a 54-year-old man killed in a road traffic accident in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil, had not been tested serologically for Chagas' disease. The recipients responded well to drug therapy for the infection and there were no signs of kidney rejection. However, the authors propose that potential kidney donors in Brazil should be screened for the presence of Chagas' disease.Carolyn A.
