Influence of dextrose and sodium lactate on thiopentone anaesthesia in dogs

Dextrose or sodium lactate in 1, 2 and 3M conc., injected i/v at 2 ml/kg immediately upon recovery from thiopentone anaesthesia produced secondary narcosis but failed to induce surgical anaesthesia. The response to dextrose and to 1M sodium lactate was, however, irregular. Sodium lactate in 2M conc, administered while the animals were still under deep anaesthesia prolonged its duration from 11 to 20 minutes. The 3M conc, produced respiratory distress.
