Myialges (Metamicrolichus) nudus caused severe, sarcoptic-like dermatitis of the head, neck, thorax, and abdomen of a captive gray-cheeked parakeet. The deplumed skin was hyperkeratotic, scabby, and erythematous. Acaricidal therapy was not successful, and the bird died. The malignant nature of this acariasis, the difficulty of its treatment, and its potential for affecting several species of birds make it important to isolate affected birds and to identify sources of infection.
