Mange and suffering from endoparasites in pigs. Results of examination in scraped skin and faeces

A group of pigs in the German Federal Republic was examined for the presence of Sarcoptes scabiei (L.) (suis Gerl.) in scrapings from the ear and of Haematopinus suis (L.) elsewhere on the body, while the occurrence of endoparasites was ascertained by scrutiny of samples of faeces. The incidence of lice and of endoparasites that included Strongylidae from the intestinal canal, Coccidia, Trichuris, Strongyloides and Ascaris suum was compared in pigs with and without sarcoptic mange. Of 123 pigs examined, 14 (11.4%) were affected with Sarcoptes scabiei and 25 (20.35%) with H. suis. The mangy and mange-free pigs were infested with H. suis at rates of 28.5 and 19.3%, respectively. Of 109 samples of dung, 38 proved negative for the presence of endoparasites, and of the remaining 71 the rates of infection with intestinal Strongylidae, Coccidia, Trichuris, A. suum and Strongyloides were 57.7, 28.4, 5.5, 3.7 and 2.7%, respectively. From the 14 pigs with mange, one sample of dung was negative for parasites and the remainder positive. Intestinal Strongylidae were present in all positive samples, and Coccidia, Trichuris and Strongyloides in 30.7, 15.3 and 15.3% of samples, respectively. When the results of examination of dung samples from mangy and mange-free pigs were compared, there was a marked difference in the rates of infection, which were 92.2% and 65.1%, respectively. A similar pattern was found with regard to infestation with H. suis, the rates for mangy and mange-free pigs being 28.5 and 19.3%, respectively. It is recommended that pigs be monitored for the presence of mange by examination of the inner surface of the ear. Treatment should still involve washing or spraying the whole body with an appropriate anti-mange wash. Points requiring careful attention during treatment are listed, and the properties and use of Jacutin (a mixture of lindane and phenylmethyl benzoate) trichlorphon (Neguvon), coumaphos (Asuntol), cypermethrin (Ardap), bromocyclen (Alugan) and phoxim (Sebacil) are briefly discussed. Skin scrapings and faeces from 123 pigs in the GFR were examined. 14 pigs were infested with Sarcoptes suis and 13 of them contained gastro-intestinal strongyles (also 2 each were positive for Trichuris and Strongyloides). 109 pigs were free from Sarcoptes and 71 of these contained gastrointestinal parasites (57.7% had strongyles, 5.5% Trichuris, 3.7% Ascaris suum and 2.7% Strongyloides).
