The vitreous cells in the peripheral surface of vitreous gel of Hartley strain quinea pigs were examined with histochemical techniques. All of the cells had some granules which were positively stained by Sudan Black B, Oil Red O and Periodic Acid Schiff stains. Chrome alum hematoxylin stain was positive in some granules. Ziehl-Neelsen stain gave a red reaction in some granules. Sudan Black B stain, after the specimen was treated overnight with xylene at 56.degree. C, was positive in a part of some granules. Nile Blue stain (pH 3.0) was negative. These results suggest that all of the granules of the vitreous cells contained lipid and carbohydrate and that some granules had the characteristics of lipofuscin.
