Problems faced by dairy advisors in the wake of uncertainty about quotas, and alternatives for dairy farmers having to cut production are discussed. The only firm conclusion is that farmers should retain as many heifers as possible and cull the poorest cows, with the objective of producing a young and healthy herd with good milk quality. The continuing trend toward calving heifers at 2 rather than 3 years old is encouraged.
