Estimation in vitro of oxygen consumption and the concentration of products of lipid peroxidation in solutions of free fatty acids showed that light at the wavelength and intensity used in phototherapy for the treatment of jaundice in newborn infants accelerates the photooxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Clinical implications are discussed.
