Data on the role of disturbances in essential fatty acid metabolism in the development of cardiovascular disease in diabetic patients and the possibility of dietary correction of the metabolic imbalances are reviewed. It is concluded that increasing dietary essential fatty acids may be useful in the complex treatment of diabetes. Individual treatment with omega -6 and omega -3 polyunsaturated fatty acids according to the stage of the disease, degree of insulin insufficiency and characteristics of the fatty acid imbalance is envisaged in the future.
