Trypanosoma cruzi and macrophages: fine structure study by the direct replica technique

The direct replica technique was used to study surface features of T. cruzi trypomastigotes and epimastigotes and their relationship with macrophages during the initial phase of phagocytosis. One of the striking features visualized by the replica was the bundles of sub-pellicular microtubules closely packed in parallel longitudinal arrays beneath the plasma membrane of both trypomastigote and epimastigote. During the first 2 h of interaction between macrophages and epimastigote, many micro-pseudopods were seen extending from the macrophage surface border to the substratum; a long micro-pseudopod was seen surrounding the entering trypanosome.
