An evaluation of the pre-school supplementary feeding programme in Chandigarh

The impact of the supplementary feeding programmes for pre-school children which were aided and favoured by the Indian Council for Child Welfare, Chandigarh was evaluated. The children were given midday snack and reconstituted skimmed milk to provide daily 7.5 g protein, 180 kcal energy, 20 mu g retinol and 1.7 mg iron. Food intake of all the children was below recommended daily allowances. Cereals predominated in the diet which lacked protective foods like pulses and legumes, meats, eggs, green leafy vegetables and fruit. The diet was deficient in all nutrients.
