Syngeneic homografting of minced gastrocnemius muscle of young and adult albino rat was studied without prior denervation, with respect to myofibrillar ATPase (m-ATPase) and succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) both biochemically (7, 14, 21, 28, 42, 56 days) and histochemically (7, 21, 42 days) postoperatively. The biochemicl pH profile of m-ATPase was also studied on day 7, 21 and 42. The results show that the transplanted muscle regenerates successfully and event gets reinnervated as indicated by the differentiated regenerated muscle fibers. The overall pattern of regeneration appears to be similar in both the age groups. The rate of muscle regeneration is a little faster (histochemically) in case of young rat as compared to the adult rat. The pattern of biochemical pH profile (m-ATPase) was almost identical in the transplanted muscles of young and adult rats.
