Succinate dehydrogenase and myofibrillar-ATPase in certain specialized mamalian and avian muscles in relation to different habitats

Succinate dehydrogenase [SDH] and myofibrillar ATPase [m-ATPase] (Ca2+, Mg2+-activated) activities were assessed quantitatively in 3 different specialized muscles (heart, pectoralis major and gastrocnemius) in 4 animals [rat, bat, pigeon and chicken] of different habitats. Heart muscles of all the 4 animals showed higher SDH and lower m-ATPase activities as compared to the pectoralis major and gastrocnemius muscles (except in pigeon where pectoralis major had slightly higher SDH activity level than heart). Pectoralis major and gastrocnemius muscles were found to have different levels of SDH and m-ATPase activities in different animals studied.
