For 5 to 6 weeks male Wistar rats weighing 50 to 60 g were given a diet based on casein, deficient in vitamin A. Control rats were given 700 IU retinyl acetate by mouth twice weekly and pair-fed with deficient rats. There was no difference in gain in the 2 groups. Hepatic vitamin A was significantly lower and colonic vitamin A significantly greater in experimental rats. Glutathione activity was 31% lower in the liver and unchanged in the colon. Glutathione S-transferase activity increased by 41.2% in the liver and decreased by 40.7% in the colon.
