Blood selenium in a beef hern affected with muscular degeneration

Se deficiency was suspected to have caused high mortality from muscular dystrophy among sucking calves. Low Se concentrations were found in cow's blood, 1.7 to 4.9, milk, 4.0 to 5.0, and calf's blood, 5.0 to 8.0 ng per ml. Silage and hay from the affected farm contained 14.2 and 8.2 ng per g. The next year Se and vitamin E were given to cows in late pregnancy and during early lactation and to the grazing calves. There were no cases of muscular dystrophy that year, cow's blood had 19 to 48 ng Se per ml, calf's blood 30 to 61 and milk 13 to 20 ng.
