Laboratory methods for the diagnosis of avian encephalomyelitis were evaluated in chicks aged 7-22 days. Histological examination and immunofluorescence are rapid methods which enable the early introduction of control measures. Agreement between overall laboratory assessment and histological examination was 70-81%, and immunofluorescence 76%. The most conclusive method (95-100% agreement) was a biological test in chickens followed by histological examination. However, this method was time-consuming. The value of chick embryo inoculation is reduced by the possible presence of intercurrent viruses.
