Rhinocerebral mucormycosis complicating poorly controlled diabetes mellitus: case report

A case of rhinocerebral phycomycosis is reported in a 61-yr-old woman. Rhizopus sp. was cultured from the antral lavage fluid and the infraorbital collection. Histological examination of material from the right maxillary antrum showed an acute inflammatory exudate containing broad, branching, aseptate fungal hyphae. The patient died after declining treatment with amphotericin B and surgical debridement.
