Five Larus canus and 19 L. argentatus aged 14 days to 20 months and weighing 240-1450 g were anaesthetized by i/m injection of a mixture of ketamine and xylazine for the purpose of implantation of the pentastomid Reighardia sternae in the peritoneal cavity and clavicular air sac. The various doses ranging from 6.9 to 225 mg/kg ketamine with 2.4 to 105 mg/kg xylazine induced analgesia and sedation with persisting mydriasis, lid and corneal reflexes for 30 minutes to 8 hours. Optimum dose did not depend on age or weight. Apart from three deaths and occasional transient opistothonus and leg paralysis tolerance was good, and 30-40 fold doses were not toxic.
