Xylazine was administered i/m to 10 adult, clinically normal goats of different ages, sex and breeds: 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 or 0.5 mg/kg. During the test ECG, blood-pressure and respiratory rate were monitored. At intervals of 15, 30, 60 and 120 minutes after the start of the test, an arterial blood-sample was taken anaerobically for the determination of the pH, pCO2 and pO2 values. Under the influence of xylazine, the following disorders were observed: bradycardis, disturbances and slowing-down of conduction in the heart-muscle, reduction of blood-pressure, respiratory depression and a metabolic alkalosis overlaid by respiratory acidosis. The intensity of these side-effects was dose-dependent. The use of xylazine in the higher dosages (0.3 and 0.5 mg/kg body-weight) should therefore be restricted to goats with normal cardiological, respiratory and metabolic parameters.
