A number of resistant ticks have been discovered in different parts of Uganda. Ticks suspected of being resistant to toxaphene were collected from the field and identified in the lab. The 7-14-days-old larvae of these ticks were used for the sensitivity test, which is described. The results are tabulated: 0-5% mortality at 1/300 dilution was taken as the criterion of resistance, 50-80% mortality as that of tolerance, and over 80% mortality as that of susceptibility. The need for vigilance is emphasized. It is concluded that the resistant ticks, Boophilus decoloratus, Rhipicephalus evertsi and R. appendiculatus, were introduced from outside Uganda and were therefore resistant on arrival; careful treatment should be applied before releasing the animal into the pasture.
