In 27 experiments using multiple N application rates conducted during 1983-84 rice yield increases with deep placed urea were 45% and 28% greater than those obtained with broadcast urea during the boro (Dec.-Apr.) and aus (Apr.-Aug.) seasons, resp., and estimated net cash returns were of similar magnitude. Results obtained during the aman (Aug.-Dec.) season were inconsistent. Simple hand-pushed applicators for deep placement of prilled urea compared well with deep placement of larger granules by hand.
