Addition of centchroman (10 .mu.g ml) to the incubation medium exerted an inhibitory effect on the in vitro steroid metabolizing potentiality of the days 5 and 6 preimplantation rabbit blastocysts. There was a significant reduction in the metabolism of 3H-labeled dehydroepiandrosterone, androstenedione and testosterone to the various neutral steroid metabolites, exhibiting an inhibition in the activity of 17.beta.-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase. 5.alpha.-reductase and 3.alpha.-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase enzymes. Findings suggest a suppression in the steroid detoxifying action and the general metabolic activity of blastocysts in the presence of centchroman.
